Drugs ruined life of the Chef known as Adam Jones

Figure 1: Burnt main characters, Image by The movie mensch

The movie that I am going to review is Burnt, it was released in 2015. This movie was directed by John Wells, produced by Stacey Sher, Erwin Stoff and John Wells, the story of it was written by Michael Kalesniko. Burnt is a comedy and drama movie, this movie has a lot of well-known actress, actors, producers, and writers such as Sienna Miller, Daniel Brühl, Riccardo Scamarcio, Bradley Cooper and many more. All these characters have appeared in many movies before and after this one and in this movie, they are the main characters.

The movie is about a man whose name is Adam Jones, who became a top chef in one of the best restaurants in Paris. Adam destroyed himself and his career by the intake of drugs and alcohol and all this things affected his own career of being a well-talented chef, drugs caused him to collapse and they paused the proceedings with his career. After three years of disappearing he recovered from the consumption of drugs after he left his hotel job, where he was working as a chef and he decided to leave Paris to start anew with his career somewhere.

Adam decided to move from Paris to London where he started to search for his former colleagues, he met his former Principal son Daniel Bruhl who goes by a name of Tony on this movie and Tony hired him as the head chef in his fine-dining restaurant. He wanted to take-over the hotel’s restaurant, but Tony refused because he does not trust him after the way he behaved back in Paris. His passion when he went to London was to work there and go back to Paris to make his own restaurant and to get three Michelin stars. When he went to visit Conti’s restaurant, he met Helene who was working for Conti but got fired and end up working for Adams, he advised her to work and they end up dating.

The actions of this movie most of the time take place inside the restaurant and in the kitchen, it is rated R as well to inform the viewers that it is not made for children under the age of 17 years and to inform the viewers that the movie consist of harsh language, nudity, drugs and etc. Like for instance in this movie when they argue in the kitchen swear words are being thrown and that kind of content is not meant for kids at all. Basically, this movie is about Adam because from the beginning it tells us about himself and  it seems like Helene is just added as main character for nothing because she does not have a lot to do in the movie.

Burnt is an interesting movie with a great kitchen setting, I think it is dedicated to the foodies basically, people who enrolled for hotel and hospitality to see what is happening real in the kitchen. It also shows that being a chef is not an easy thing at all, you have to work under pressure and you will experiences some challenges before becoming perfect, like for instance in this movie when they prepare their foodie for the presentation they have to work fast and even when Adams throw some of their dishes in the bin after tasting it you can tell from their faces that they are disappointed but they don’t give up.

For me I think this movie is made to give hope to people that have destroyed their careers. It is inspiring people that have made mistakes in their lives, dropped their careers due to certain reasons but by watching this movie they can see that they still have time to got up and build their lives, do what they have been passion for. The kitchen setting is so nice, the food in this movie looks so splendid and the movie, its cinematography and sound were excellent even though the editing was little bit disappointing

Well I can recommend this movie to people who are interested in hospitality so that they can see where they had to go through before they become well- talented chefs in the future,  so that they can decide now if they still want to went through all that pressure or not just because some people end up dropping in their careers because they have not done research about it to know more about things they will face instead they just enroll for it.

Witsand Community and its food challenging issues

Figure 1 : Types of the veggies that are sold at one of the stands in Cape Town. Image by Zethu Plati

In nowadays life is more difficult for people who stay in the areas that has more population density and high unemployed rate, because they end up building shacks to get rid of rent fees which makes things more difficult for them simple because they can’t practise certain things that can help themselves in a small area.

Witsand community is one the societies that experiences these things just because people don’t have space to make themselves some small gardens to avoid buying everything more especially during this difficult time where some of them have lost their jobs, they don’t have money to feed their families and even those who have a little space in their yards to plant vegetable for themselves they cannot do that just because people they throw everything anywhere since there is poor waste disposal facility. Some don’t even know which type of soil is perfect for ploughing, so by planting in such area like this community is just a risk just because people can become sick by just eating something that they have plough from the dirty soil or where people can throw their waste.

Figure 2: A Fruit and vegetable stand in the community. Image by Zethu Plati

By hearing the struggles of the community I can ask for a meeting with community leaders, raise the issues that are affecting those who are unemployed, create a community project and advice to call for a community meeting so that people can avail themselves to work in the project.  Once everything is settled will try to contact the City of Cape Town, ask if they can please start with the people from the informal settlements when they place people in the newly built RDP houses so that we can get a  space to make a community garden that will donate vegetables once a week to the families that can’t afford to buy it.

To get hold of the Western Cape Department of Agriculture also would help, because I can state challenges that the community is facing that will be obstacles when they start a farming project. Agriculture department can help with things like training so that the workers can be aware of the things that they can do and things they can not do as well, educate workers how to plough and to take care of the plants so that they can not be damage whether by the climate or something else  and this department can be helpful when it comes to check the soil if it is fertile or not before the project can start ploughing. The Project can ask for funding as well so that it can be able to buy products that can prevents pests from damaging the harvest and to make soil fertile.

Law enforcement officials demolished four shacks in Witsand community

City of Cape Town demolished four shacks in Witsand informal settlements, Atlantis a day before Freedom Day. When I arrived on the scene Law Enforcement officers were loading the material in the truck and cupboards, fridges, beds, blankets other victims’ belongings were thrown around.

Community Leader Nolufefe Mbombo said that  the land they built in has water and people who built shacks there before were moved to a dry place, and even there ones who built on that place this year were all called to a community meeting. ” All those who attended the meeting got the house number and their shacks cannot be demolished, “she said.

Mbombo said, “I have raised an issue in the previous meeting that was held, that people who are renting shacks and their landlord ask for money they must come forward we will deal with that person as community leaders”. But instead of telling us that their landlords want rent bills they decided to occupy the land without anyone’s permission which is total wrong because now we cannot defend them,” she said.

The land occupier that does not wanted to be named, said that on the previous day a Law Enforcement official came carrying a camera and taking pictures of their shacks without even asking anything from them. Today they just asked us to get out of our shacks and demolishing the, but I asked them not to demolish mine I will do that on my own and they demolished other shacks, she said.

Tumiso Mfisa’s Profile

Tumiso Mfisa

MTech Business Administrator

I believe in the creation of a Youth Cantered Society, which aims to leave a mark in our communities without using a gun nor a knife but through awakening the visions of young people in ensuring the socio-political and economic issues are addressed. To have my deeds to always match my words through the grace of God.

Tumiso Mfisa

Alumni Tumiso Mfisa was born and Bred in Nyanga East in Cape Town one of the townships that are known as high dangerous areas in the Western Cape, by knowing him and looking at his leading skills you would not thought that he grew in such dangerous area. And that is what made him not to fall for town life like to involve himself in things that will ruin his future but instead he had passion in developing youth and awakening their vision and to address things that will help then in the future.

Tumiso Applied at CPUT for Diploma in Management and he said that CPUT was the first university he applied on, but it was his third preference in the three options he had. He saw no point for changing his mind because CPUT has already accepted him, so he chose to study there. As he was studying in CPUT he became a member of a Western Cape Prestige Member of Africa Break the Silence in 2017, and where he served as a Minister of the Western Cape and he also participated in the End Rape Movement up until 2018.

Tumiso had no idea about university classes but attending classes for the first surprised him, because he did not expect that everything will be easier and enjoyable to him. But his professors made things easier for them, by giving them study material even though the course was kind of difficulty. Even the Instructors were very good, and they were not giving them more work at the same time.

“I was lucky enough to attend classes in the business faculty and I have to say we had good quality of facilities and teaching space, with quite good lecturers who made the environment very enjoyable. Especially having to adjust to how CPUT was viewed at the time since there were man protests going on. But I have to say classes were beyond my expectations”, Mfisa said. He was not scared to get lost in campus just like those who grew up in small towns, and he said that campus life to him has always been great, especially when they have Piazza programs where all students are there and there’s some good entertainment time going on.

“It has been a great experience with all the events I have attended and with my involvement in many campus activities all of that have contributed to me enjoying my campus life”

Tumiso Mfisa

He enrolled for B-tech in Business Administration in 2018 and he did not thought of changing school but he saw the need of going back to CPUT and further his studies because it was beneficial from him to continue with his studies, as his internship allowed that and helped him at his workplace after his first graduation.

Tumiso joined the Western Province Blood Transfusion Service and he serve as a Peer Mentor. His love for politics developed and he affiliated to the EFFSC political organisation, where he learnt how to lead and to work in the needs of the students. But that does not just end to being a member of the political organisation, his branch trusted and believed in him that he can lead, and they elected him as a Chairperson of the Local Student Representative Council for 2018-2019 term.

Figure 2: Tumiso Mfisa during his term as LSRC Chairperson, Image: Provided

“I’m currently enrolled for an MTech: Business Administration. I am a Peer Educator Mentor at the CPUT HIV/AIDS Unit in a voluntary capacity since 2019. I am also a Peer Mentor for the Western Province Blood Transfusion Service since 2018”.

Figure 3: Tumiso Mfisa at the peer education programme, Image: Supplied

“And I’m currently the Coordinator of the CPUT Amajita’s Men’s Programme and the Peer Education Officer Assistant at the CPUT HIV/AIDS Unit that offers different services including testing of staff and student and HIV counselling”, Mfisa said. And the aim of this Unit is to help, prevent and to control HIV/AIDS, Sexual Transmitted Diseases and TB to all CPUT staff and students. To being referenced or called the condom guy by many has not affected anything to him  and for his passion to help and educate people, instead it helped him to gain information and skills that made him the person he is today and it also built his profile for the future. He also mentioned that now he serves as the Deputy President of Africa Break the Silence ABTS.

I often listen to music and keep my self busy by reading some novels, political literature as I’m a political organisation active member and most of the time I went for a hiking to clear my mind and pause the stress of the academics. And sometimes I engage myself in the Focus Group Discussion and Awareness campaign on the CPUT HIV/AIDS Unit on campus.

Figure 4: Tumiso Mfisa in a Focus Group Discussion programme, Image: Supplied

Here is a piece of advice I would like to send to all CPUT undergraduates’ students; Some advice to you or anyone would be to get involved as there are many opportunities within the university. Join res activities, campus extra mural activities. Be part of the political landscape not by voting by leading. Be part of programmes for women cause all that will help you grow and understand your university in many things.

He credits CPUT for giving him access to information more especially when it comes to how to apply and prepare for interviews, the in-service programme that he received really helped him as he got a taste of a workplace environment. Through being taught on the basics of getting a job. The engagements he had with most lecturers really became helpful as they helped to broaden their understanding on many things related to work environment.

“Have a good selection of friends, don’t fall for the city life you won’t grow because of it, ensure you position yourself with involvement in politics, sports and other activities available for you. Ensure you keep making time for books as your main reason you’re here is to get a qualification”.  That is the advice that I have for someone who wants to study at CPUT.

The historical High School in District Six, Cape Town in the 1900’s

Figure 1: Trafalgar High School in District six.  image by VOC FM, 24 June 2016 Source: http://www.vocfm.co.za

Trafalgar High School is located at the foot of District Six in Cape Town, according to South African History Online this high school was launched in 1912 after it was discovered that the Cape School Board had been gross careless about “non-European” training. It was the main school to offer optional level for Coloured students during that time also, it was arranged in a coloured territory and it had more coloured educators than different races in its staff. It played a huge role in fighting and in marches opposed to apartheid rules in Cape Town. Among others, an examination found that “the School Board Act has given no advantage on the Coloured populace. At that point, the training for Coloured was restricted to the strategic, which cooked for essential instruction as it were. The Cape School Board, with a huge Coloured populace in its region, upheld just three noteworthy schools – Chapel Street, Albertus Street and Sea Point Tramway. The decision of establishing this school for the Coloured population was announced by Dr Abdullah Abdurahman, who was a President of the African Political Organisation and Harold Cressy at that time. Abdullah was the first Coloured individual to acquire a BA degree at the University of Cape Town. After a protracted cycle, the Cape School Board at last endorsed the new secondary school with Cressy as its first school head and an aggregate of 60 understudies in its first year, 32 of whom were young ladies. In a long time from that point forward, notwithstanding deficient with regards to essential offices, the school has created numerous understudies who had proceeded to get recognized in each field from game to medication, science, business, and training. “The essential reason of the school is that training will be coordinated to the full improvement of the human character and to reinforcing of regard for common liberties and principal opportunity. It will advance getting, resistance and fellowship among all individuals, regardless of race, shading, or doctrine,” the school states on its site.

Harold Cressy was the first principal of Trafalgar High School after it was established, then Kies became the principal after and most of the teachers at this coloured school at that time were all the members of TLSA/ NEUM. His arrangement spared the school from conclusion. He worked indefatigably to raise the notoriety of the school by improving principles. Along with the APO he compelled the Cape Town city committee to discover reasonable convenience for the school. Following five years the city gathering consented to give a superior site to the school and the Cape School Board gave 3 000 pounds for the erection of another structure. It is said that they also played an important role to help this school during the apartheid struggle. And under their leadership and ruling skills made the showing strategy at Trafalgar that the instructors were utilizing was absolute distinctive to other schools in the Western Cape Province, which had expressive results than expected. Indeed, even the educators were joined in the battle of the non-white through training and some other exercises even though they were unique.  And Trafalgar made politics progress after they were restricted by the government in all non-white schools, after Kies supported all the Trafalgar staff to turn out to be more political dynamic after this time of bafflement. Kies was considered as a fomenter by the state, and on 13 February 1956 he was accordingly restricted from instructing at Trafalgar. His forbidding made endure to the association, and later in 1963 two instructors to be specific Cosmo Pieterse and Appolis Slingers were likewise restricted yet Kies didn’t surrender, he continued difficult up until he began to work with Juta Books, at that point from there he began to seek after his vocation of turning into a lawyer and in 1970 he turned into the first

Coloured people during that time were there one who were suffering from the racial discrimination and were not seen as people who can do better for themselves. That is when they decided to form their political organisation which is known as APO, which played a huge role in underscoring accomplishing solidarity among Coloureds, advancing instruction, restricting “class enactment” (for example biased shading enactment) and guarding the social, political and monetary privileges of Coloured. This organisation grew so fast in just two years after it was formed it had more than 2000 members in all its branches. With the help of Dr. Abdurahman who was a pioneer in the battle against racial persecution and that their battle was in numerous faculties an essential precursor to later, more successful types of opposition. As the battle against white supremacism inside the Coloured people group was continuous during that time, he overwhelmed the association for the 35 years of his administration, to such an extent. Basically, I would say that APO helped and directed to the formation of the TLSA even though it collapsed after 40 years of serving as the most influential political organisation for Coloureds.  Just because later in those years Abdurahman initiated in creation of the Teachers League of South Africa which is commonly known as TLSA, this league played an important role in growing and moving forward the coloured teaching profession behind the process to change coloured education.

In late 1960s politically sanctioned racial segregation government articulated locale six a White just territory under its racial isolation strategy. Many region six occupants were coercively moved to places that are in excess of 25 kilometres from it since they were non-whites, and the time they had to move they were not in any event, being helped with RDP houses. The first ruins started in 1968, when homes and organizations were demolished, and the main structures left standing were places of worship. Over a time of 15 years, non-White individuals from the District Six people group were coercively moved, principally to the Belhar municipality, Rylands Estate and Hanover Park on the Cape Flats. After the forced removal of the community in District six, but the removal of the school was not considered at all even though people were staying away from the Trafalgar school. As it seems like they were thinking of stopping people from attending at Trafalgar that did not  happen because instead of people to drop out they became more, everything was just normal including sports and academics which caused the school to maintain a pass rate of 80-90%. The school is known of producing activists, attorney’s, writers etc. Igsaan Higgins, said the school had not only provided a good education, thanks to excellent teachers, but it also taught its students survival skills. “We were one of the three schools who in 1985 decided to sacrifice that year and do it over due to the involvement in the student boycotts which brought this city to a standstill. This is a school that had a different way of thinking where we were pushed to get through to higher learning where the playing fields would be more level and in preparing us for that world, they made sure that we were also street wise,” he said.
